For as long as I can remember, my relationship with my mother felt distinctly different from that of my peers. Unlike other mothers, she did not engage with me in nurturing ways—there were no hugs, smiles, or shared moments of joy. Questions about my day or my friends seemed to go unnoticed. It felt as though I were invisible to her.

My mother's words could be deeply hurtful; she often reduced me to obscenities and would sometimes go days, weeks, or even months without speaking to me. She adeptly maneuvered her way into the position of victim in any given scenario while portraying others as envious of her. I would often stay up late while being tasked with the responsibility of caring for my younger siblings, facing blame or punishment for their misbehavior.

Emotional expression was stifled; questions were unwelcome. My feelings were routinely dismissed or minimized, leading to a profound sense of confusion. My memories felt rewritten at times, and the expectation was clear: comply without question and remain silent. Living in such an environment often felt like existing within a war zone, where I was perpetually on high alert.

I've dubbed these types of mothers "Lemon Moms" due to their reliance on manipulation, guilt, shame, and humiliation rather than nurturing bonds. This approach often leaves children feeling inadequate, unloved, and misunderstood—issues that can echo into adulthood, manifesting as relationship difficulties or mental health challenges.
